DENTON (AP) – Prosecutors are seeking at least 15 years in prison for a North Texas man who fatally shot his cousin as the two argued outside another relative’s home.
Humberto Jesus Martinez-Benitez of Lewisville pleaded guilty Tuesday to murder. The penalty phase continues Wednesday in Denton over the 2012 slaying of 26-year-old Jacob Gutierrez in Lewisville.
The Denton Record Chronicle reports the cousins allegedly were drinking and argued about an gun-related incident several years ago in Mexico.
Prosecutors say the 58-year-old Martinez-Benitez has a criminal history including a 1993 drug conviction.
