DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - The city of Dallas has reached a gruesome mark in relation to one area of crime. According to the Dallas Police Department, during this month alone detectives have investigated 20 murders – making 2012 the deadliest November in the city’s history.

Dallas City Councilman Dwaine Caraway believes the city may need more county and state support. “All law enforcement, collectively, need to kinda take a look and see what we need to do and how we can make sure that folks understand that this region is “zero tolerance” to crime,” he said.

As it stands, statistics have 140 murders being committed so far this year in Dallas. Since Saturday, six people have been killed.

Caraway says part of the blame is because there is such easy access to guns. “Not all these crimes are committed with AK-47s, some are maybe 38mm as well, but certainly there needs to be more focus [and] commitment towards trying to deter people from just carrying and picking up a gun.”

So far the 2012 numbers have the city with seven more murders than last year.

Caraway also contributed the rising murder rate with a lack of fear among criminals. The councilman suggested that the possibility of going to prison should be something be more intimidating. “Jail needs to be a place of, I hate to use the word ‘terror,’” he said.

Despite the new record for November, police say the murder rate is still lower than two years ago when 148 people were killed. Overall violent crime in Dallas is down by 1-percent.
