DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Prosecutors have called it one of the most gruesome domestic violence cases they have worked in years, but the Deanna Cook murder trial could soon be held up. The prosecution is set to go, but defense attorneys are reportedly going to ask for a delay at a pretrial hearing on Monday, December 2.
The hearing was originally set to take place on Tuesday morning, but it was rescheduled for unknown reasons.
The 32-year-old victim was intentionally drowned in her bathtub in August of last year. Police said that Cook’s ex-husband, Delvecchio “Red” Patrick, is responsible for the murder. Patrick was in a holding cell at the courthouse on Tuesday, but was never brought into the courtroom.
Cook’s killing is one of the cases that led to sweeping changes in the way that Dallas dispatchers handle emergency 911 calls. The victim called 911 for help during the attack, but her body was not found inside of her apartment until two days later. In that recorded 911 call, you can reportedly hear the victim being drowned and begging for her life.
Emergency dispatchers did not mark the call as ‘critical.’ When police officers first arrived at Cook’s home in southeast Dallas, they left aftering knocking and getting no response. Family members later discovered her body.
Patrick’s trial is currently set to begin on December 9, but the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office said that it will likely be moved to either January or February.
